You send your CV for a senior leadership role. Days pass. Then weeks. Nothing arrives: no rejection, no explanation, sometimes not even an acknowledgement that your application was received. You are left to guess at reasons that may have nothing to do with what actually happened.
Here is the truth after nearly thirty years in executive search: you will never receive feedback on your CV, no matter how senior the role. For many roles you will not even receive an acknowledgement of receipt, let alone a reason why you were not taken forward.
This is not personal and it is rarely a reflection of your seniority or your achievements. Recruiters and hiring managers are working through hundreds of applications for a single role under real time pressure, often screening by CV or LinkedIn profile before a human ever reads the detail. Giving individual feedback to every applicant is not commercially viable and in many organisations legal caution discourages it outright.
After nearly thirty years in search, it is usually obvious to me within seconds which of two things is true. Either you were not right for that particular role at all, however strong your background. Or you could well have been perfect for the role, yet your CV was never destined to be the door-opener it needed to be. Either way, I can help.
“In thirty years of executive search, I have rarely needed more than a few seconds to see why a CV was passed over. The candidate almost never knows and almost never finds out.”
It is easy to underestimate how disheartening this process can be. You invest real time and thought into an application for a role you wanted, only to meet a wall of silence. Left unanswered, this can chip away at your confidence and your motivation, even though the silence usually says more about the volume of applications than it does about you.
This is where I come in. I help you apply to the roles that are genuinely right for your background and experience and I help your CV work harder, so that it becomes an obvious yes for interview rather than a maybe that is quietly set aside.
Key takeaway
You do not have to guess why the silence happened. A fresh, experienced eye can usually tell you in minutes.
