Switching industries is one of the hardest moves to make well on LinkedIn, because both the algorithm and the humans reading your profile are trained to expect continuity rather than change. Get it right and LinkedIn becomes your strongest ally in the switch. Get it wrong and it quietly works against you.
Your headline is the first thing, sometimes the only thing, a recruiter or hiring manager reads before deciding whether to click through. If it still describes your old industry, it tells the reader and the algorithm that you belong there rather than where you are headed.
Lead with the function or the level you offer rather than the sector you are leaving. "Operations Director, scaling teams through change" travels further than "Operations Director, [Previous Industry] Ltd."
Every senior career contains skills that transcend sector: leading through ambiguity, building teams, owning a P&L, managing stakeholders at board level. A career switch succeeds or fails on how clearly these are drawn out rather than on the sector-specific detail that no longer applies.
Go through your experience section line by line and ask whether it would mean anything to someone in your new sector who has never heard of your old one. If not, rewrite it or cut it.
Both LinkedIn search and, increasingly, AI-powered search more broadly match on the words recruiters and hiring managers actually use. If your profile is full of the vocabulary of your old industry, you will not surface for the searches that matter in your new one.
Look at the job specs and the LinkedIn profiles of people already doing the role you want and note the terms that recur. Weave the genuine ones into your own profile, in your own voice, rather than bolting on keywords that do not fit how you actually talk.
A career switch is rarely won by your profile alone. It is won by the conversations that follow from it. Commenting thoughtfully on posts from your new sector, following the right companies and people and reaching out for genuine conversations all signal, to humans and algorithm alike, that you are serious about the move.
“A LinkedIn profile that still speaks the language of your old industry will keep finding you your old industry’s opportunities.”
